How to Add Personality to Your Interior Design

Posted June 13, 2018 by Glendale Communities

Your apartment is an extension of who you are and a great way to make your apartment a bit homier is by matching your home décor to your personality. How do you do this? We’ve come up with a few ideas:

Show off hobbies & prized possessions

One of the easiest ways to display a little “you” through your décor is to focus on adding elements that reflect your hobbies and showcasing your prized possessions. If you like to paint or draw, maybe hang up some of your artwork; if you enjoy gardening, bring some of your fresh plant life indoors to adorn side tables.

What do you like to collect? From magnets and coffee cups to pottery or treasures from around the world, show off these important items on shelves, walls, or tables around your apartment. Keep shelves less busy by using only one or two items per shelf. Such items are the perfect conversation starter and give guests a glimpse into your personality.

Let your inner self be the theme

Ignore the traditional rules of interior design and instead let your inner self shine as the theme of your room. Mix and match fabrics you appreciate or decorate with contrasting color palettes that make sense to you.

Your apartment will feel the best when you have decorated it to display what makes you unique. Don’t worry about what your guests think; this is your apartment and your chance to explore your inner designer. Whether or not the couch pillows appropriately complement the color of your living room rug is less important than if those color combinations instill personal feelings of home.

Follow your strongest traits

Do you appreciate the finer things in life or do you prefer to keep things simple? Are you a free spirit or perhaps an old soul? However, you would describe yourself, decide what best defines your personality and use this to drive your decorating decisions.

If you have a bold personality and appreciate opulence, focus on adding some bling to your space, such as glitzy lamps or plush fabrics. Minimalists might appreciate a more simple, organized style, while easygoing people can find comfort in quirky artwork and vibrant colors. Figure out your strongest personality traits and shop for elements that feel right when decorating your apartment.
